Riverhead Parish Council owns two sites of around 20 allotments each.
Macartney Allotment Garden is situated at the end of Orchard Road and Broadmead Allotment Garden between Heathfield Road and Hawthorn Lane.
Both sites benefit from tap water.
The plots measure between 3 and 12 square rods. They are currently rented yearly for £3 per square rod, which is collected in September. The Council also collect a small amount (usually around £3 per year) on behalf of The Riverhead Allotment Association to cover the public liability insurance premiums.
All Tenants are automatically members of The Riverhead Allotment Association. This allows the Tenant to benefit from cheaper public liability insurance to cover his/her plot arranged for all Tenants by the Association.
When a plot becomes available, it is offered to the next person on the waiting list, with a preference for Riverhead residents. If this person is happy to work the land, he/she signs an agreement with the Parish Council, which details both parties’ obligations. The core of obligations for the Tenant is to cultivate his/her plot and keep the area and its surroundings tidy.
